This Entrepreneur Has a Lesson About Career Growth for All of Us
This Entrepreneur Has a Lesson About Career Growth for All of UsThis Entrepreneur Has a Lesson About Career Growth for All of UsHard work. Determination. A willingness to take feedback. A desire to keep learning and improving. These are career-boosting traits we talk about all the time at The Muse. And sohonigweinimes, were lucky enough to see them in action. Last month, I visited Soweto, a township in Johannesburg, South Africa, and met women who had started businesses in their community. Its one of the poorest parts of the country, with unemployment rates of more than 30%. One of those women was Gape, the 28-year-old owner of a fast food stand. She wakes up at 2 AM, seven days a week, to bake 150 loaves of bread and prepare the days food for zu sich regular customers, mainly men who work at a nearby steel plant during the week. Their wives are at home, and I like feeding them so they dont go out and find new wives, she tells me with a smile. Her recipe for success is continuing to l earn and grow. In the spare time she does have, shes taken business classes through Coca-Colas 5by20 program to improve her skills in inventory management, accounting, and marketing. Theyve helped her business so much that shes hired three employees and is contemplating a second location. She also makes a point to listen to her customers. Shes not afraid of hearing their feedback- instead, she uses it to become a better cook and a smarter business owner. Its a lesson for anyone who wants to grow Be humble enough to seek advice from those around you. Even if youre the woman with the best bread in town, theres always more to learn. (It really was the best bread. But that recipe, she wouldnt give me.)

Dealing with Homepagelessness
Dealing with Homepagelessness Dealing with Homepagelessness He may leid have a home, but he does have a home page of sorts- at LinkedIn, where he has posted a resume that mentions two degrees, from Dartmouth and Purdue and experience as a Senior Research Engineer at Lockheed Aerospace and Applied Physicist at Aerodyne Research Corporation. He is also the featured interviewee in a YouTube video that has attracted the attention of some heavyweight online-news organizations, such as Huffingtonpost.com and Time.com.Inconsistently reported in mainstream media as an unemployed and homeless Ph.D. in plasma physics (www.theblaze.com) with two masters degrees (one in engineering and one in acoustics) or as having just the two masters degrees (Huffington, Time), Johnson has become a poster child for the un-and underemployed. The details of his story, including the well-publicized YouTube Boston interview, can be found all over the Net, with the Huffington Post article and video about him ser ving as a good sample treatment.Note In a call to one of Lockheed Martins corporate affairs spokespersons, Jeff Adams, I requested verification of employment and credentials and welches surprised that my call was the first regarding Johnson. Adams helpfully said he would look into the matter upon receipt of my emailed query and details. (Should that information become available, it will be posted as an update.)Homepagelessness and RecruitmentEven though blogosphere response to his tale has been intense, the focus of this report is something other than the vivid and poignant details of his employment and housing challenges or their accuracy and veracity. Its the issue of homepagelessness.Homepagelessness can afflict not only the unemployed and homeless, but also employed recruiters. Although almost certainly a rarity among recruiters, the homepageless recruiter, viz., one with no online presence whatsoever- either in the form of a LinkedIn profile, a Facebook page, an independent agen cy website, a YouTube video or an umbrella corporate website- needs to catch up with the 21st century and Maurice Johnson, whose YouTube video interview and LinkedIn profile have plucked him from the masses of the unemployed and obscure and propelled him into Net celebrity (even if not on the scale that similarly discovered Justin Beiber enjoyed after his amateur(ish) Stratford, Ontario sidewalk debut videos on YouTube got noticed by promoter Scooter Braun).Apart from the tactical and strategic commercial and professional benefits of having an online identity, there are a number of psychological onesReminder that you and your professional expertise mucksmuschenstill exist, even if not currently utilized. Even for those who are not homeless, having a home-page or other online professional presence serves the same psychological purpose as the Star-Spangled Banner- a reminder that your personal flag and you are still there.Reassurance that, no matter what, you still have a secure base- one you can call home or at least home page. Such a sense of security, however tenuous, can be crucial to staying emotionally afloat.Reinforcement of your values, value and goals With the home page as a personal mirror, you can validate yourself and reinforce your identity.Recognition that you dont need a fixed physical space or address to run your business It is psychologically, as well as professionally liberating, to know that you can reach out and be reached anywhere in the world.Regular proactive behavior, to the extent that you have to monitor, update and beef up your page(s). This can be a subtle, but valuable, morale mainstay during professional dry spells.Real-time and readily offered input and feedback from others that allows you to adjust and align your efforts and enjoy reality checks on your situation, challenges, opportunities and prospectsReintegration and integration- into a community, virtual or otherwise of renewed, sustained or expanded contactsYou can be absolut ely certain that Maurice Johnsons YouTube and LinkedIn homes are providing him with not only valuable, helpful professional and media exposure, but also with all of the foregoing psychological benefits, including a comforting, perhaps inspiring, sense of place in the scheme of things, if not yet a place he can literally call home. If, as is virtually certainly the case, you have both a home and some kind of home page, you can still note, appreciate and cultivate the listed benefits of overcoming homepagelessness. Whats more, you may want to consider setting up an additional home, e.g., a YouTube video or an additional social media site.Having a second or third home is not just a luxury for the rich. Online, it may be a necessity for those who want to be rich.As for those who are truly homeless, having at least one online home may make the difference between being psychologically or otherwise able to home in on a job (and a home) and being forced to hit real highways instead of the wh at then Vice-President Al Gore memorably and presciently called in 1993 the information superhighway.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Valuable Lessons I Learned From The Worst Boss I Ever Had
Valuable Lessons I Learned From The Worst Boss I Ever Had Valuable Lessons I Learned From The Worst Boss I Ever HadPosted March 5, 2013, by Josie ChunOnce upon a time in a galaxy far, far away, I welches a young uni grad looking for an entry-level location that could, just possibly, lead to a career. I didnt really know what I wanted to do, but I was wide open and the world was my oyster. I had a masters arts degree under my belt from the countrys most respected university, I had done my backpacking trip around Europe, and now I was ready to tackle a real job. As luck would have it, I managed to get my foot in the door of a large media organisation. It was a lowly position but I was working for one of the countrys most well-known and well-respected broadcasting personalities. It was the perfect abflug to my brilliant career or so I thought. Over the course of the following months I was dismayed to see that all was not what it seemed in TV wonderland. My boss, in particular, prove d to be a little different from what I had imagined. She was imperious, egomaniacal and ruthless, with no time or courtesy for anyone who wasnt important and by treating everyone like a minion, with only the Executive Producer as her confidante, she created an environment of paranoia thinly veiled by a veneer of fake camaraderie. At my exit interview, before I (thankfully) left for Australia, her parting words to me were In this business, you have to eat sh*t and swallow it. If thats what it took to get ahead there, I knew it wasnt the place for me. As negative as this experience might sound, it was one of the most valuable professional experiences of my life because it forced me to really think about what was important to me, what my core values were, and what I was and was not willing to compromise for the sake of my career. It also taught me exactly what kind of manager I would hope never to be. So to anyone who is struggling in a job that makes them miserable, or working for someone who they despise, take heart this is helping to clarify what you want and whats important to you, and youll have learned some extremely useful lessons that you will carry for the rest of your life. For me personally, there were two invaluable lessons I took away from my brush with the queen bee Boss From HellTreat people everyone with respectMy experience only helped to reinforce what, for me, is a core value that everyone, no matter their position, should be treated with respect. I believe that everyone deserves this and makes their contribution, and I dont believe the world should be divided into the important and unimportant. I dont care who you are, no one deserves to be treated like toe jam because they arent rich and famous or dont have a fancy title. No job is worth compromising your self-respectEveryone has their own limits and for some, getting ahead justifies whatever means. But for me, I knew I could never survive in an environment where grovelling and sh*t-s wallowing was expected as a given. Doing menial tasks isnt a problem, and you can still do those with your integrity intact. But if your job leaves you feeling icky, demoralised and like youve sold your soulmusik to the devil, then youve got a problem. Identify and Live Your Personal Values to Succeed
Identify and Live Your Personal Values to SucceedIdentify and Live Your Personal Values to SucceedIf youd like to experience the most success in both your personal and your business work life you will live them based on the values that are most important to you. To know what you value most, it is extraordinarily useful to spend some time identifying your key personal life values. Sure, you can recite a few values that are important to you without doing this work. Most people can. But, if you want to use your values as a personal compass to light your way, youll invest the time to seriously consider what you value the most. Why Do You Need to Identify Your Deepest Held Values? Understanding your most deeply held beliefs gestalts the foundation for creating a life that brings you happiness, fulfillment, success, and even- joy. They provide the cornerstone that each individual needs for guidance and making choices. Your values help you judge the appropriateness of careers and jobs f or you. They help you select hobbies and volunteer activities. They drive how you interact with your colleagues and bosses and govern your relationships with your family and friends. Convinced you need to identify your values? You will want to start by talking about what values are and see some examples of values. What Are Values? Values are traits or qualities that are considered worthwhile they represent your highest priorities and deeply held driving forces and beliefs. When you are part of any organization, you bring your deeply held values and beliefs to the organization. There they co-mingle with those of the other members of the company to create an organization or family culture. This culture either serves your organizations goals effectively or it does not. (If not, you may want to consider how to change your corporate culture so the culture supports the accomplishment of your full organizational potential.) Value Statements Value statements are derived from and gro unded in values. They define how people want to behave with each other in an organization, an institution, a company, or a family. They are statements about how the organization will value customers, suppliers, and the internal community. Value statements describe actions that are the living enactment of the fundamental values held by most individuals within the organization. In one organization, a university health care center, all of the employees helped to identify the organizations core values. They ended up with the acronym, I CARE. Integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence were the values identified. Then each department took each of the values and developed value statements that the employees believed best exemplified the values in action in their department. An example of a value statement was, We will keep no student who needs care waiting for more than fifteen minutes. Another was, No student will need to remove items of clothing until they were seen b y a doctor and the removal was deemed necessary for a proper examination. The following are examples of values. You might use these as the starting point for thinking about and articulating your own values as a human being. Examples of Values ambition, competency, individuality, equality, integrity, service, responsibility, accuracy, respect, dedication, diversity, improvement, enjoyment/fun, loyalty, credibility, honesty, innovativeness, teamwork, excellence, accountability, empowerment, quality, efficiency, dignity, collaboration, stewardship, empathy, accomplishment, courage, wisdom, independence, security, challenge, influence, learning, compassion, friendliness, discipline/order, generosity, persistence, optimism, dependability, flexibility, change Why Identify and Establish Your Values? Your values are made up of everything that has happened to you in your life and ?theyinclude influences from your parents and family, your religious affiliation, your friends and peers, your education, your reading, your experiences, and more. Effective people recognize these environmental influences and identify and develop a clear, concise, and meaningful set of values/beliefs, and priorities. Once defined, values have an impact on every aspect of your life. They form the foundation for your decision making and your relationships with other humans. You demonstrate and model your values in action in your personal and work behaviors, decision making, contribution, and interpersonal interaction. You use your values to make decisions about priorities in your daily work and home life.Your goals and life purpose are grounded in your values. Choose the values that are most important to you, the values that you believe in and that define your character. Adopt them, commit to them, and then live them visibly every day at work and at home. Living your values is one of the most powerful tools available to you to help you become the person you want to be, to help you accompl ish your goals and dreams, and to help you lead and influence others. A value-based and principled person is most able to create a successful and fulfilling career and life. Dont waste your best opportunity.

Michelle Obama doesnt believe in lean in should you
Michelle Obama doesnt believe in lean in should youMichelle Obama doesnt believe in lean in should youMichelle Obama was in Brooklyn on Saturday night for her Becoming book tour when she did something that surprised the people around her. She used an expletive. But perhaps more shocking was how she deployed the curse word to denounce a feminist philosophy that has recently informed working womens outlook.Marriage mucksmuschenstill aint equal, yall, Obama said.It aint equal. I tell women that whole you can have it all- mmm, nope, not at the same time, thats a lie. Its not always enough to lean in because that st doesnt work.Obama quickly cut herself off and apologized to the room for getting too comfortable onstage. But her words have an element of truth that Sheryl Sandbergs optimistic ideology about leaning in to have it all doesnt take into account.Women are steadily pursuing education and entering the workforce at higher rates, and those gains show that at least a sizable number of the female population want a career or purpose outside the household. But women still carry most of the burden as caregivers for children and elderly parents, and between 2001 and 2015, only 28% of women worked persistently full-time, year-around. In our current economy, that puts them at a severe disadvantage in terms of job opportunity and growth.According to a new report bythe Institute for Womens Policy Research, women who had worked at some point between 2001 and 2015 made 49% of what men did across the 15-year span. In a 2015 essay, New York Magazine contributing editor Lisa Miller explained how the labor forces unkind treatment of women affects not only older workers, but also young, ambitious professionals looking for role models. No single womans experience of success is generalizable to all women in spite of all the millions of books sold, Sheryl Sandberg only really knows what worked for her, Miller wrote. The better plan would be for a young woman to enter a workplace and, upon looking around, see lots and lots and lots of established, successful females from which to collate a vision of herself.Right now, that vision is a pipe dream - experts sayeven women such as Sandberg who have pioneered paths that make leaning in seem possible fall under scrutiny their male counterparts somehow avoid when their companies are in crisis.Though Obama may have wished she had worded her response differently, the uproarious applause it solicited is likely not only a sign of approval because the former First Lady let loose. Its also an indication of how much the message resonated with women who are trying to make a name for themselves but keep stumbling into a system that works against them, with people such as Obama as their few available role models.A good workplace is one in which you can look around and see versions of yourself five years from now, or ten, Miller wrote. But for women, this exercise in mirroring gets harder and harder as they push toward 40, and 50, and beyond - for the simple reason that older women with ambition dont stick around.
